On Thursday 26 February, EuroCham’s Digital & Technology Committee convened government regulators, telecom executives, and private-sector innovators for a high-level Breakfast Talk examining the rollout of 5G and its implications for Cambodia’s digital economy.
Following opening remarks from Executive Director Mr. Martin Brisson, Commissioner of the Telecommunication Regulator of Cambodia H.E. Mr. Kimsann Sun, provided a comprehensive overview of the regulatory landscape and early rollout progress.
From the operator perspective, Mr. Muhammad Adeel Israr, Chief Technology and Information Officer at Smart Axiata, outlined key infrastructure bottlenecks, including site access, backhaul capacity, and energy reliability, while emphasising that coordinated action between industry and regulators can unlock leapfrog opportunities.
panel discussion moderated by Mr. Kenneth Tang, Vice-Chairperson of the committee, brought together leaders from telecom, finance, and digital platforms. Discussions focused on long-term economic impact, monetisation pathways, and ecosystem readiness, with panellists agreeing that cross-sector collaboration and sustained investment will be critical to realising 5G’s full potential.
Closing the session, Digital & Technology Committee Vice-Chairperson Mr. Thomas Schings reaffirmed that Cambodia’s 5G journey marks the beginning of a new chapter in digital transformation, one that will depend on strong cooperation between public and private stakeholders.
